Choose The Right Press

Before you start making vinyl transfer designs, you need to find the right heat press, one that works for you, especially if you’re starting a business. So you want to really do some research into different options before you actually learn how to heat press a shirt.

For example, you don’t want to buy a press that’s too small and can only be used for some designs. Opting for a larger one can give you more options to print all types of t-shirts and garments. Look into a heat press that works on a wide range of products as you may eventually decide you want to print on tote bags, fabric book covers, dresses, and many other things.

The most important thing to consider is whether you’re going to get a home press or a professional press. The first is made with personal use in mind. However, it is possible to use it for a small business in the beginning stages. But if you are already like handling t-shirt orders and plan to get more orders, then a professional press would be a better choice as it offers more pressure settings and temperatures to work with.

Set Up The Heat Press Properly

Once you buy a heat press that you think you can use, you need to set it up properly. This ensures your safety and guarantees that your shirts come out beautifully.

The next thing you want to do is to set it up efficiently. Make sure that the press is on the level surface and that you have access to it from three different sides. You don’t want to have to stretch to pull down the top play, but you also don’t want to have to bend over to push it into place. Table height is about a good position for a heat press. For safety reasons, you want to keep the heat press out of the way of children and pets and near an outlet that’s only used for the machine.
While you may be tempted to turn the heat press on and start working immediately, you need to take some time to read the manual that came with it. The instruction manual isn’t a guide, but it will give you general information and tell you how to care for your new heat press. Be sure you cover that safety information as well.

What Heat Press Temperature Do You Use?

While heat presses are pretty simple to use, it is still like baking a cake because you have to use the right temperature for the appropriate project. There are different temperatures you use to get you the specific look that you want. For the transfer to look professional, the temperature needs to be set correctly and you need to apply a certain amount of pressure. Heat press temperatures will differ depending on the material you’re using.

So, if you’re using vinyl or heat transfer vinyl (HVA), the machine is going to use different temperatures depending on the finish of the design.

For example, a matte finish requires you to:
Use a temperature of 285 to 315 degrees Fahrenheit
Apply the heat anywhere from 3 to 12 seconds and use medium pressure. Once you apply the heat you can remove the t-shirts and peel the vinyl off either hot or cold.

Different Types of Vinyl

There are different types of vinyl you can use for your transfers. These transfers may slightly affect temperatures and pressing times.

Temperature and pressing times will change slightly with these finishes:

Metallic Transfers

Metallic transfers a little different because you need the same temperature, but you apply the heat for 10 to 15 seconds while adding a medium pressure.

Hologram Transfers

When you use a hologram transfer, you need the temperature to be set at 305 to 315 degrees Fahrenheit but only for about 10 to 15 seconds at medium pressure. You don’t peel off to transfer until the garment is completely cool.

Glitter Transfers

When you use glitter transfers you wanted to raise the temperature to somewhere between 315 and 350 degrees Fahrenheit and Press with medium pressure for 12 to 15 seconds. with this type of transfer, you can peel either hot or cold.
Pressure

Once you set the temperature knob you can set the pressure knob to the setting you want. Thicker materials require more pressure and thinner ones don’t require hardly any.

Note: you should try to add medium to high pressures in every case, although you will want to do some experimenting.

Heat Press settings for HTV

HTV vinyl is the simplest material to use a heat press with but to get the best result, you need to use a specific temperature of about 315 Fahrenheit. You also want to apply a stronger pressure of 10 t0 15 seconds.

In some cases preheating the fabric before using the heat press can make the design adhere better.

Can You Heat Press Polyester?

It is possible to heat press polyester, but you need to do it carefully. If you want to add style and uniqueness to a t-shirt or polyester fabric, then do it. However, this type of material is somewhat difficult to work with.
Polyester is one of the most difficult types of fabric to work with because it can react to excessive heat that is applied for too long. If it gets too hot it can burn and even melt.

Even if it doesn’t melt, too much heat can cause it to look patchy and shiny. When you heat press polyester, choose a lower temperature of somewhere about 270 to 300 degrees Fahrenheit.

Sublimated Fabric

This is a soft fabric that does not require a lot of heat. So when you heat press it, you need to apply a lower heat, and you don’t want to press it for too long. An ideal temperature for this type of fabric is 270F. You should heat for about 10 seconds and peel the transfer after another 10 seconds.

Give It a Try

You can heat press many types of fabric, but before you heat press the final garment, you had better run a trial. You don-t want to make horrible mistakes with your final fabric, especially if you are still asking: can you heat press polyester?

Different fabrics react differently to a heat press process. There are other influencing factors, such as the percentage of materials in a garment. When you run a test, you can verify the temperature setting to use.

How to Create The Heat Press Transfer Image

Create artwork using computer art software like Paint (free), Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator or Affinity Designer as well as many others. You may also decide to scan an image that is copywrite free. When selecting an image, know that images with dark colors will show up better on fabric than those with lighter fabrics.

Mirror the image if you have words or numbers on the transfer. If you don-t flip the image, they will transfer onto the garment backward.

Transfer Paper Materials

Choose transfer papers according to the material you are transferring the image to. Light fabrics like white, yellow, and light grey need a transfer paper made specifically for these colors. In comparison, darker colors will need other vinyl transfer papers made for these colors.

Printing The Transfer

Before you print your image on your expensive transfer paper, print it on regular paper to make sure the colors come out as you expect. When you like what you see, you are ready to print on your transfer paper.

Note: An inkjet printer works best when printing transfer images.

Final Thoughts

Hopefully, we have explained the use of a heat press, and you still aren’t wondering how to use heat press machine? We hope these instructions serve to show you how easy it is to use this kind of machine.

Now that you have the final idea on how to transfer your images to fabric in a very professional way, you can print on just about any fabric you want. Just be sure to test the fabric once or twice before you print on your expensive material.

1. Clean the drum of hot press machine with dry soft cloth on weekly basis or according to the situation and requirements;

2. Wash the heat transfer material after pressing, avoid leaving on the drum, if it is difficult to be removed, cleaning up with a wet cloth will do;

3. Apply light lubricating oil on bearing parts before starting work in order to prevent rusting steel roller and extending its service life;

4. Turn off power supply before maintenance or repairing work of heating elements,and then pull out plug from socket directly as far as possible or remove battery;Also turn off gas and close valve when doing repair/replacement works on gas equipment;

5. Don’t drop the objects into the machine;

6. DonThe heat press machine can be cleaned with bitumen, paint thinner. You can’t use solvent or alkaline-based cleaners to clean it;

7. The stainless steel drum and heating plate requires regular cleaning in order to run smoothly and prolong the service life of the machine;

8. Once every 3 months a good idea is to remove the heat transfer material from the screen and wash it under warm running water to clean residual burn offs on the surface of the material as this will extend its life expectancy also make sure that you dry all loose fibres before reattaching.
